A: Patient flaps wing a bit at start of flights, but eventually glides. Flight is silent, even when flapping. Patient did some extra passes, but stopped at every other perch toward end of exercise. Appeared to land on feet better whenever grounding and not landed on hocks.

A: Removed luxated LD3 digit, placed temporary bandage in case of post op bleeding.

P: Change bandage tomorrow, if sutures clean, dry and intact can leave uncovered, if bleeding rebandage.

Procedure - Digit amputation
Performed by - AD
Surgery time - 5 minutes

Pre-medicated with torb IM.  Anesthetized with isoflurane via
facemask, then intubated with 4.0 uncuffed ET tube.  Placed in
dorsal recumbency.  Plucked and scrubbed LD3 for surgery, middle
digit luxated in and out of place.  Incised over the dorsal aspect
of the digit with #15 blade, dissected out muscle and tendon
and removed luxated digit.  Flushed wound site and closed skin
with 4-0 webcryl in a simple interrupted pattern.  Covered sutures
with tissue, glue, TAO, telfa/tegaderm/papertape and vet wrap.
 Patient recovered slowly but uneventfully from anesthesia.

A: BAR. 110 flies with shoulders hunched/scrunched up slightly, but they can get
around just fine. Hocks depress slightly when clinging to wall wire to the point
where they almost touch the wire, if they're not touching.

A: BAR. Pinkness of feet may be due to less than ideal perching condition of F4, but will be something to check for on next catch.

S: In rafter window, startled hit ceiling and fell to ground and was caught. Hock sitting in box
O: Brought to hospital to repeat rads and discuss case. Bird is still spending a lot of time on hocks and not fully standing, rads show a small bridging/abnormality on spine above pelvis, right leg still seems significantly weaker than left. Going to move to F4 for a week to better evaluate if bird is perching vs hock sitting while in enclosure. Fast Day.

A: BAR, still struggles to stay standing for prolonged periods, right leg weaker than left
P: re-evaluate next week.

A: BAR. Noted that bird is still not fully extending/using legs when they come down, relies heavily upon wings or tips backwards. Not confident in their ability to readily perch in variable conditions or potentially hunt.

O: Caught to take radiographs and then put back in cage. Noted a lot of beige urates/feces in cage (likely excreted barium).

A: BAR. Most of barium appears to have passed through the bird's system, however there is an area in the intestines that appears to be retaining it for some reason. It's unclear if this is due to an obstruction or some other issue.

Bird is still processing food and defecating regularly - a perforation to the GI tract may have enabled barium to leak through and settle within surrounding abdominal cavity rather than remaining within GI to expel regularly.

P: Take repeat rads today midday and PM to continue monitoring barium procession

O: Took x-ray: gas cranial to ventriculus/caudal to liver looks larger, intestines still appear bunched/cranially displaced, fluid/material still in the caudal coelom but seems less than on last x-ray. Tubed 10 cc barium mixed with 10 cc water (total 25 ml/kg) and took first x-ray in barium series: ventriculus looks large, barium already starting to empty into intestines. Plan to take x-rays every ~30 -60 min to watch barium move through GI.

Reflexes intact in both legs - bird able to pull limbs back, but difficult to tell if bird actually has deep pain on either leg. Possible divot felt on palpation of lower spine but did not see on x-rays. Very large amount of bone in ventriculus on x-ray. Old R mandible fracture present - feel stable, but small amount of possible bone exposure on the underside of the jaw.
